OpenOffice 3 from Sun Microsystems By Margaret Alva Most of the computer users are using MS Office from Microsoft. But a free and open alternative to this is the Open Office-3 from Sun Microsystems. Now, Sun Microsystems has made major improvements in its new version Open Office 3. Some of the improvements are given below: 1. Open Office 3 opens MS Office 2007 native file formats without a hitch. This is a significant improvement as Office 2007 introduced new formats for Word, Excel and PowerPoint and with OpenOffice 3. OpenOffice has caught up as far as compatibility goes. 2. The suite supports native Vista dialogs now which is a big plus if you are running it on that operating system. Earlier it looked like an XP application. Integration with Mac OS is also supposed to have improved considerably. 3. OpenOffice 3 runs faster than OpenOffice 2.x although some early milestones were faster still. Hopefully this will be addressed soon. 4. The suite now imports all your settings including macros from OpenOffice 2.x.. In my view OpenOffice 3 is the first suite to offer this feature. 5. The alternatives to MS Office’s Word and Excel in OpenOffice 3 are Writer and Calc.
